Maryan Mehlhorn: A historical legacy

This world-renowned swimwear designer is still the co-owner and creative director of her eponymous brand. 

Maryan inherited a successful swimwear business from her parents. But instead of continuing with this, she used this inherited historical know-how to launch her own swimwear brand. Alongside her husband, Thomas Mehlhorn, Maryan Mehlhorn established her brand more than thirty years ago, in the 1980s, from their base in South Germany. 

The brand has gone on to become one of the best-known names in quality designer swimwear, with a well-earned reputation for delivering a great fit via premium quality materials and tailoring.

Sustainability and Style

The brand is hyper-aware of the need for all big businesses to examine their carbon footprint and minimise it. Maryan Mehlhorn explores the emissions throughout its production chain, right through their supply chain. 

As well as an intention to minimise carbon emissions in their existing business models, they intend to move away from the current measures of success, which focus on sales volumes. Instead of mass production, the brand focuses on quality and value. 

To this goal, the brand has initiated a business partnership with Italian premium fabrics manufacturer EUROJERSEY. Fashion is a high resource-consuming industry. It’s important to Maryan Mehlhorn, therefore, to focus on developing sustainable swimwear. EUROJERSEY’s patented SENSITIVE® FABRICS go beyond recycling and use a holistic approach to a product’s life cycle and production. It’s about the careful use of resources during production, as well as keeping supply chains short, and maximising a product’s life cycle, or longevity.

 EUROJERSEY declares its PEF (Product Environmental Footprint), evaluating its entire environmental footprint throughout the manufacturing cycle since 2019. Renewing their central heating plant has created an annual saving of 217,000 cubic metres of methane. This saving is equivalent to 434 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. They also reduced water consumption by 8%, saving 40 million litres. They also focus on making in Europe, and minimising dead stock and packaging waste.
